Course Plan

The Rise of Citizen Journalism

The internet broke down establishment news structures and let alternative news media rise. In our first lesson of the CJS Boot Camp we set the stage by looking at citizen journalism in context: as a response to failing, lying establishment media.

The Power of Starting

In this lesson we discuss the most important step you’ll take: the first. It’s incredibly important for you to not just listen but act — it’s the only way to learn and make any meaningful progress.

Five Journalistic Virtues

In this lesson we talk about the importance of having a backbone as someone who helps other people think, and we look at five journalistic virtues which can help to ensure you act responsibly and effectively.

Journalism As Self-Expression

In this lesson we look at the personal touches each person brings to the types of stories they choose to cover and how they cover them. It’s okay to start local if that means covering new ground and doing good, original work.

What Will YOU Bring to Journalism?

In this lesson we look at the unique assets, abilities, and opportunities you can bring to bear on your work as a citizen journalist.

The History of Journalism

In this lesson we look at the history of journalism, bookending our review with a lookat the players who started modern journalism in the early 19th century and ending with the modern swell of new media and the pivotal role of my late friend and mentor, Andrew Breitbart.

Going Places

In this lesson we look at the value of leaving your computer, neighborhood, or country. Sometimes this is the only way to get to the truth of a story, and being bold enough to travel might just be what changes the narrative forever.

Research OCD

In this lesson Lee discusses the role of being obsessive in your research: not just relentlessly searching for the truth, but being detail-oriented in the way you choose to search, both in how you search and in how deep you go.

Multimedia Search

In this lesson we talked about why you need to search through multiple types of media when doing research: looking not just on Google or Bing, but on YouTube, Souncloud, Google Images, and just about any place that’s aggregating material. You’ll be shocked at the things you’d find.

The Single Biggest Mistake People Make In Research

In this lesson we look at how to avoid the biggest mistake you can make when you’re researching a project by structuring your approach to stories.
